Get involved Volunteer Volunteer stories Catherine - IAPT volunteer Hey! I’m Catherine, a volunteer for Mind in Coventry and Warwickshire. I started working with the IAPT service in 2012 after spotting an advertisement looking for volunteers in my University. When I began working with IAPT, I met clients who had been experiencing symptoms that I had been read about, this was a profound experience as it helped to remind me that there is a person behind the symptom. In academia, it’s very easy to become focused on checklists and meeting criteria, but only when you meet the people face to face, hear their stories and walk with them on their journey to recovery can you ever really appreciate the degree of strength and endurance it takes to combat mental health issues. Volunteering for IAPT is without a doubt the most beneficial corner of my CV, as week in week out I meet new challenges with service users- but this continues to develop my capability and confidence as a future mental health professional. To anyone studying Psychology, or even in the mental health field – I would entirely recommend volunteering for Mind. Meet the people from the pages... it will change your life!
